Q. What is Data Recovery?

A. Data recovery is the process of analyzing and recovering data that's lost through hardware failure, software failure, human error, computer crime, virus attack or natural disaster.

Q. What typically causes Data Loss?

A. Data loss may be due to some or a combination of the following:

  • Mechanical (hardware or physical) Failure
  • Logical (software or filesystem) Failure
  • Human error
  • Computer Crime
  • Virus attack
  • Natural disaster

Q. What is Mechanical Failure?

A. A mechanical failure occurs when your system no longer communicates with your media properly from a physical viewpoint. The system BIOs no longer sees or autodetects the hard drive. It may make strange or clicking noises, which is usually an indication of a head crash.

Turn your system off immediately. Don't use any standard software utilities to try and correct the problem. Generally, software can't resolve mechanical problems like head crash. Most standard software utilities are good for preventive maintenance but may cause major damage when there are mechanical problems.

Q. What is Logical Failure?

A. Logical failure occurs when the basic file system is corrupt. This could be due to human error (accidental file, folder or partition deletion or format) or virus attack. The media is still mechanically intact but you can no longer access the data.

Using standard software utilities to attempt self-recovery could render your data unrecoverable. Most standard software utilities are good for preventive maintenance but could cause irreparable damage when there are already logical problems.

Q. What is a Cleanroom?

A. A contamination-free room with controlled variables such as:

  • Density of airborne particles per cubic metre

The air in a Cleanroom is repeatedly filtered to remove dust particles and other impurities .The measure of the air quality of a Cleanroom is described in Federal Standard 209. Cleanrooms are rated as

    • Class 10,000: no more than 10,000 particles larger than 0.5 microns/cubic foot of air
    • Class 1000: no more than 1000 particles
    • Class 100: no more than 100 particles.
      • Required for Hard Disk Drive fabrication
      • Required to open a Disk with mechanical failure for component repair or replacement  prior to data recovery.
  • Temperature
  • Humidity

These variables are highly regulated in order to protect sensitive equipment from contamination and damage. Cleanrooms are required in the production of hard disk drives  and other technologies  like silicon chips.

Those who work in Cleanrooms must wear special protective clothing called "bunny suits" that do not give off lint particles and prevent human skin and hair particles from entering the room's atmosphere.

They need to pass through a air shower chamber just before entering the Cleanroom

A Cleanroom is  a superset of a Cleanbench.

Q. Is a Cleanroom always needed for Data Recovery?

A. No.

Only cases  involving Mechanical Failure require a Cleanroom to open up the media to repair or replace failing or faulty components  before recovery is possible. The Cleanroom is never required for Logical Failure as there's no need to open up the media.

Data Recovery costs  escalate whenever Cleanroom time and resources is utilised. Datasage keeps costs low by using cutting-edge technology to extract data from failing media, keeping them out of the Cleanroom unless absolutely necessary.

Q. What is  a Cleanbench?

A. A table with a ceiling hung module or other device which incorporates a HEPA filter(s) and motor-blower(s) for the purpose of supplying laminar flow clean air to a controlled work space.

Q. Are there instances where lost data cannot be recovered?

A. Unfortunately, yes.

Sometimes the damage to the hard drive is so severe that data recovery is not possible. When the read/write heads crash, they may scratch the magnetic storage media until data is beyond recovery.

Q. My hard disk is making a strange noise. Should I open it up and check what's causing it?

A. No. Hard drives should only be opened in a Cleanroom by qualified engineers. You risk causing further and even unrecoverable damage to your drive and may void the manufacturer's warranty. Contact Datasage and allow us to help you

Q. My hard drive doesn't spin up. What should I do?

A. Don't knock the computer or device until it spins. This can result in unrecoverable damage. Contact Datasage and allow us to help you.

Q. I deleted the partition from my hard drive. What should I do?

A. Standard algorithms used by standard utility programs do not always provide satisfactory results. Immediately power off the system as unwittingly allowing anything to be written to the media may overwrite existing data and complicate recovery or even render recovery impossible. Contact Datasage and allow us to help you.

Q. Do you recover Digital Camera Photos and Mobile Phone Photos?

A. Yes. We provide Digital Photo Recovery and Video Recovery for both Digital Cameras and Mobile Phones. In fact, we can recover any data stored on Digital Media Card in both these devices.

Q. How can I prevent data loss?

A. Regular back up of your data will ensure critical data is not lost should a failure or disaster occur. However, should your restore fail or is not as up-to-date as you require, Datasage is here for you.

Q. How much does Data Recovery cost and how long does it take?

A. Recovery Cost depends on the media and cause of data loss.  Contact Datasage for Free Collection, Free Evaluation, Free Quotation and Free Delivery of Recovered Data.

Q. Does Data Recovery have to be expensive to be effective?

A. Unlike what you may have been told, definitely not.

Costs  are higher for recovery due to Mechanical Failure when the Cleanroom is required to safely open up media to repair or replace failing or faulty components before recovery is possible. However, by leveraging  best of breed technology, knowledge and  skills , Datasage is able to extract data even from failing media, keeping your media out of the Cleanroom most of the time to greatly reduce your costs.

Data Recovery due to Logical Failure doesn't require prior component repair or replacement and, therefore, Cleanroom Time & Resources.

Should your Data Recovery Provider justify high Data Recovery prices with their investment in a Class 100 Cleanroom, you need to know  that a Cleanroom is only required for Mechanical Failures. Technically, their investment cost should not apply to you for Logical Failures. Practically, however, company costs and overheads will always find their way to the product and service price and therefore, the customer.

Datasage strives to keep Data Recovery affordable by reducing unnecessary overheads and keeping your media out of the Cleanroom unless absolutely necessary. Like utility bills (electricity, water, etc), you only pay for Cleanroom Resources that you use. When you fly SIA, you only pay for A380 premiums on the A380, not on other flights.

Request to visit the Cleanroom to see what percentage of the office contributes to a high investment and thereby recovery price. Do they have a Cleanbench or a Cleanroom? A Cleanbench costs S$2,000 to S$4,000 whereas a Cleanroom costs tens to hundreds of thousand Singapore Dollars depending on size. A Cleanroom needs to be operational 24hours as it's not economically viable to power up on an ad hoc basis. It would take more cost, resources and time to recreate than to maintain a Class 100 Environment. This 24x7x365 massive recurring cost makes business sense mainly for Production Lines which never shut down anyway.

Should your Data Recovery Provider justifiy high Data Recovery prices with a big office and higher staff strength, what percentage of the head count is actually involved in Data Recovery? Quantity doesn't necessarily mean quality. It's not the size of the dog in the fight. It's the size of the fight in the dog.

In Data Recovery, for obvious reasons like accountability, continuity and confidentiality, 1 Engineer should handle any given job from start to end. In any event, having 10 Engineers doesn't mean the job is done 10 times better or faster. It would just be a case of too many cooks.

It''s perfectly alright to be a smaller company. It's not alright to be a smaller company misrepresenting itself as a big company or Multinational Company.

Q. What is the Evaluation process?

A. Datasage will, within 1-2 business days:

Evaluation is free. However, should you decide to cancel the job at any point during or after Free Collection of your media, Evaluation or Quotation, a S$25 cancellation charge applies. This is to nominally offset time and resources invested up to this point. To show our sincerity, we will give you an additional S$25 discount for your next successful recovery with us.

Should you proceed with the recovery, Datasage awards you 25% discount off non-promotional Data Recovery Prices for 1 year from your Invoice Date.

Q. How long does the Evaluation take?

A. Evaluation time depends on the cause and severity of data loss. However, we strive to have evaluation completed within 1-2 business days of receipt of your media.

Q. How long does recovery take?

A. We have 3 Service Levels depending on your preferred response time.

  • Economy: Within 5 Business Days (Digital Media Card: Within 1-3 Business Days)
  • Priority: Within 3 Business Days
  • Express: By Next Business Day

The cost of each Service Level depends on each specific data recovery scenario. However, once we give a formal quotation after the evaluation, we will commit to it and never come back to you with a higher price.

Q. How will my recovered data be returned?

A. Just let us know your preferred format.

  • CD-R (Free)
  • DVD-R (Free)
  • New Hard Drive (Special Price)
  • Onsite data transfer to customer's own storage device or system

We provide new hard drives at cost for Recovery Customers.
